CBT Worksheet: Analyzing the Thoughts That Drive Us

When something happens, the thought that follows shapes how you feel and what you do next. Often, you never stop to check whether that thought is accurate. This free worksheet, based on cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, walks you through one thought at a time: what it is, what it's doing, and whether there's a fairer way to read the situation.
What Makes This CBT Worksheet Different
It doesn't ask you to think positively. It asks you to look at the evidence, then land somewhere more balanced and true. Here's what's inside:
- A three-part flow (awareness, reflection, shift) that moves from the raw thought to a fairer read
- Space to name the situation, the automatic thought, the emotion, and how intense it was, from 0 to 10
- Evidence-for and evidence-against prompts to test the thought instead of just believing it
- A before-and-after intensity check, so you can see what shifted
- A "key insight" line to capture the one thing worth remembering
- Print and fillable PDF versions, so you can write by hand or type on screen
How to Use It so It Fits Into Your Life
Bring a recent moment when you felt much worse than the situation seemed to call for. You don't need to know the thought in advance; sometimes the feeling comes first, and the worksheet helps you uncover the thought beneath it.
Work through the three parts in order, and be as fair to yourself as you would be to a friend with the same thought. This is a self-reflection tool, not a substitute for therapy, and it works best on one specific situation at a time rather than everything at once.
If certain thought patterns keep showing up, however much you examine them, try to map out what's underneath in the Liven app.
